iOS (previously iPhone OS), introduced with the first iPhone in 2007, is a mobile operating system created and marketed by Apple Inc. for its iOS-compatible devices including the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Although it is largely based on Apple's Mac OS X, it also incorporates features from previous versions of Mac OS. Although originally developed as a mobile device operating system, it is now also used on Apple television sets and Apple Watch.
Also, while iOS does not allow third parties to release their own software on the App Store, Android does. The software freedom afforded by Android has also made it a popular platform for privacy-focused mobile apps and services, such as the Firefox browser and YouTube video-streaming app.
One notable strength of the Android platform is that, by allowing a large community of developers and hackers to create applications that can be freely shared, it has enabled new software ecosystems, including desktop environments such as XBMC and free software email clients such as Inbox (formerly K-9 Mail). These are not available on iOS or Windows Phone, and for this reason critics have derided the iPhone's and Windows Phone's somewhat stagnant UI and app ecosystems, especially in comparison to Android's.[342] Despite the low pricing of the hardware, the market share of Android devices has increased in recent years, to more than 50% by 2016.[343]
Apple's iOS devices are very similar to each other across several dimensions including hardware and software. Specifically, they are based on a microkernel-based Unix-like kernel, known as Darwin, which draws heavily from Mach, and a Unix-like user space. The most noticeable difference between the various devices is in their hardware, with a range of processor architectures available including ARM, x86, PowerPC, and MIPS.
