While the Straw Hats enjoy a warm day at the beach, their ship with all their equipment and weapons is stolen. They can do nothing but watch, as it disappears into the distance. A week later, dressed in cloth from a rental store for wedding ceremonies and riding a one-person paddle boat they set out to go after their lost belongings. At sea, they encounter the boy Akizu and the young man Borodo. The two call themselves the Thief Brothers and claim to be after a well-known treasure, called the Diamond Clock from Clockwork Island. Actually, they are the ones who stole the Straw Hats' ship and brought it to Clockwork Island to make the Straw Hats fight the Trump Siblings. The Trump Siblings Boo Jack, Honey Queen, Skunk One, Pin Joker, and Bear King (the leader), are another pirate crew who occupied Clockwork Island for years and forced its inhabitants to build weapons. A number of ships bearing the mark of the Trump Siblings appear and a short fight ensues, during which the Thief Brothers' ship is destroyed and Nami abducted. Using mere pieces of wood to stay afloat and an improvised sail for propulsion, the group manages to reach the foot of Clockwork Island. A long, circular staircase laced with deadly traps leads up to the actual island. There, Nami makes the acquaintance of the Trump Siblings' captain, Bear King. He takes a liking to her and decides to make her his bride. Eventually the Thief Brothers and the remaining Straw Hats make it to the end of the stairway and onto the main island. A beautiful landscape appears in front of them, but the island's citizens are in no mood to cherish it. Not knowing that Akizu is their son, a pair of them tells the group of the island's past. Then the heroes storm the Trump Siblings' stronghold, built around the island's key, which holds the island together. One after another, the Straw Hats get picked off and captured, until only Luffy remains. Once he reaches the stronghold's top and frees his crew, the movie climaxes in an all-out battle, during which the Trump Siblings are defeated and the island's key is destroyed. Clockwork Island crashes down into the ocean, but Akizu reunites with his family and the Straw Hats reclaim their ship.
This is a whole movie just for Chopper, so it's not a shock it's often considered the worst of the One Piece movie lineup. As the title suggests, the story revolves around Chopper becoming king of an island of animals, which isn't exactly the most exciting premise. Overall, though, it's vintage One Piece: the crew make it to a new island, defeat all the bad guys there and that's that. The final battle, at least, is entertaining. Unless you're that elusive Chopper stan, this is a definite skip.
Mamoru Hosoda, director of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Wolf Children and more, certainly doesn't seem like the type of guy to take on a One Piece movie. When he did, though, it was truly something special. Never has One Piece been anywhere near as experimental, gripping and terrifying as it was in this film. The aesthetic is creative, there are some serious stakes, and the plot is uncharacteristically dark. You'll be taken on a journey by Hosoda's stylized animation, watching as the Straw Hats' getaway to Omatsuri Island morphs into something way more serious than anyone expected. Even for those who aren't well-acquainted with One Piece, this film stands out as a dazzlingly unique piece of media, rejecting the usual One Piece flair while still capturing the spirit of the series. Definitely check it out.
These latter few One Piece movies (excluding Straw Hat Chase) have a lot in common: great art, exciting cameos, fanservice, tried-and-true One Piece storylines and some Oda-approved exposition. One Piece Film: Gold is the longest movie yet, following the Straw Hats' adventures in Gran Tesoro, which is kind of like the Los Angeles of One Piece. Untouched by the World Government, expect Gran Tesoro to allow a lot of familiar friends and foes to mix together in extravagant chaos. We're treated to some fun fights and funky music. On the downside, there's some disconcerting CGI, and the long runtime might bore you here and there. Overall, though, this is one of the most enjoyable films. It looks good, has lots of cameos, and there's certainly nothing out of the ordinary, so enjoy some high-budget, celebratory One Piece.
Agony of the Feet: Sanji severely injures his own feet trying to kick Boo Jack's spiked balls, since he doesn't have his shoes on. He gets better, though. And Now You Must Marry Me: Bear King attempts to do this with Nami. Animal Motifs: Each of the Trump Siblings has one. The Bear King is a bear. Honey Queen is a honey bee. Pin Joker is a kiwi bird. Boo Jack is a pig. Skunk One is a skunk. Big Bad: The Bear King, Large and in Charge and the architect of everyone's misery. BFG: The Bear King's plan is based on using a colossal, highly dangerous cannon, named King Cannon, to take over East Blue and then the world, allowing him to become the Pirate King. But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Pin Joker wants a rematch with Zoro because the latter gave him a scar across his face. Zoro doesn't remember him at all. The Cameo: The ending of the movie shows characters of upcoming arcs (as at the time, the anime was moving into the Baroque Works saga) where we see cameos of Vivi (in her Ms. Wednesday disguise), Karoo, Igaram (in his Mr. 8 disguise), Ms. Monday, Mr. 9, Dorry & Brogy, Dalton, Wapol (along with Chess and Kuromarimo), Chopper & Kureha, Mr. 3 and Miss Golden Week, Mr. 5 & Miss Valentine, Sir. Crocodile & Nico Robin (going by Miss All Sunday), and Ace. Likewise cameos of previous characters like Dragon, Shanks, Smoker, Tashigi and even El Drago from the previous film. Curb-Stomp Battle: In the beginning, when most of the Straw Hats are without their weapons and regular clothing, the Trump Siblings easily trounce them. But once they get them back, the two groups swap which side of this trope they're on. Damsel in Distress: Nami, which kicks off the plot of the movie. Debut Queue: While he made a cameo at the end of the first movie, this is Sanji's first movie where he's now with the crew and in a full on adventure with them. Death Glare: Nami gives Skunk One a rather demonic one after being captured. Dirty Coward: Honey Queen, despite being a Logia user, decides to run away after the defeat of the other Siblings. Unfortunately for her, she doesn't get far before Nami traps her in a bottle. Disney Villain Death The fate of Bear King after Luffy defeats him. Doomed Hometown: Clockwork Island itself, as the key to the island inevitably gets destroyed in the final fight. However, the residents were quite prepared for such an outcome via parachutes and don't even mind losing the island, preferring losing it altogether over having the Trump Pirates rule it. Dwindling Party: Beginning when Nami gets kidnapped by the Trump Pirates, and continuing once the rest of the group begins Storming the Castle. First Sanji gets captured by Honey Queen and Boo Jack; then Usopp sacrifices himself to let the others escape from Skunk One, at the cost of getting caught himself; then Luffy and Zoro get caught in a trap, and Borodo abandons them to try to take on the Trump Pirates himself; then Pin Joker assaults Luffy and Zoro while they're still caught in the trap, and thanks to Zoro Taking the Bullet, he is weakened and captured as well. Finally, Akisu wakes up and runs after Borodo, leaving Luffy all by himself to save the other six (who are all at the mercy of Bear King and his minions). The Family That Slays Together: The Trump Siblings. Though they don't look like relatives. Family Theme Naming: Aside from the Animal Motif, the top Trump siblings' names refer to the most important cards in a deck in which most games revolve around. Bear King. Honey Queen. Pin Joker. Boo Jack. Skunk One/Ace. Fartillery: Skunk One uses a jet-pack that uses fart gas to fly and knock out his opponents. Go-Karting with Bowser: At one point, Nami is seen winning a poker game with the Trump Siblings. Skunk One is especially moping. Happily Adopted: Akisu of the Thief Brothers, who was found floating in the ocean by his adoptive brother, Borodo. It's eventually revealed that Clockwork Island is his home island, as his parents sent him out to sea when he was a baby to keep from being ruled over by the Trump Pirates. Heroic Sacrifice: Usopp does one of these to prove to Akisu that he can be heroic, by stopping Skunk One's assault on the rest of the group so they can keep moving...at the cost of getting captured himself. Zoro does this for Luffy as well against Pin Joker; see Taking the Bullet. Borodo attempts to pull this by strapping himself with dynamite, intending to take the Trump siblings with him. However, doing so will destroy Clockwork Island's key, which will also destroy the island itself. Hoist by His Own Petard: How some of the Trump Siblings lose the Straw Hats in round two. Pin Joker has his poisoned darts reflected back to him, weakening him enough for Zoro to finish him. Skunk One tries to beat Usopp with his gas, but Usopp shoots an explosive into his jetpack and blows him out of the sky. The Bear King is defeated by his own King Cannon bullet. I Choose to Stay: Despite Akisu finding his true parents and home, he chooses to continue sailing with Borodo. Large and in Charge: Bear King is the boss of the Trump Siblings and also the largest of them. Made of Iron: Bear King ate the Rock Rock fruit, which makes his body harder than stone. This makes him Nigh-Invulnerable and also allows him to heat up his own fists. Making a Splash: Honey Queen ate the Melt Melt Fruit, allowing her to turn her whole body in an unspecified liquid. Ms. Fanservice: Honey Queen, who, on the top of being beautiful and buxom, must undress to use her Logia powers. And of course, Nami, who opens the movie in a bikini (the top of which she unstraps so that Sanji can rub suntan lotion on her back). Running Gag: Pin Joker mangles idioms constantly, and someone always corrects him. Sealed Evil in a Can: Nami seals Honey Queen in a jar when she tries to escape in liquid form. Spectacular Spinning: Luffy defeats Bear King by catching the cannon bullet fired at him, grabbing the building with his legs and spinning till the force snaps him back toward Bear King and he hits him with the appropriately named \"Gum Gum Screw Attack.\" Spikes of Villainy: Boo Jack's Spike Spike Armor looks like a simple jacket, but can grow spikes like a pufferfish. Taking the Bullet: When Pin Joker fires a bunch of poisoned needles at Luffy and Zoro, Zoro jumps in front of Luffy and takes all of them, severely weakening him and allowing him to be captured. Akisu does this for Borodo, as well, when Bear King attempts to shoot the latter. Luckily, Akisu wears a metal plate under his shirt as a bulletproof vest. Tempting Fate: Boo Jack personally makes himself an enemy of Sanji's by mocking him and calling him weak after he catches Sanji off guard with his attacks. But once Sanji gets his shoes back ... Verbal Tic: Skunk One ends all his sentences with \"gas\". 59ce067264
