More has been written about Chinggis Khan than perhaps any figure in Asian history, but much of this has been misleading, inaccurate, or prejudicial. Many Westerners accept the stereotype of Chinggis as a barbaric plunderer intent on maiming, slaughtering, and destroying other peoples and civilizations. To the Mongols, however, Chinggis Khan is a great national hero who united all the Mongol tribes and carved out the largest contiguous land empire in world history. And according to this latter view, Chinggis and his descendants promoted frequent and extended contacts among the civilizations of Europe and Asia, ushering in an era of extraordinary interaction of goods, ideas, religions, and technology.

The Sphinx is the oldest and longest stone sculpture from the Old Kingdom. During the eighteenth dynasty, it was called "Horus of the Horizon" and "Horus of the Necropolis", the sun god that stands above the horizon . In later times, many sphinx images were carved in smaller sizes or in cameos with the faces of the reigning monarchs. The face of the Great Sphinx is believed to be that of Chephren, the fourth-dynasty pharaoh who built the second-largest pyramid in the Giza triad. In the image of the Sphinx, the pharaoh was seen as a powerful god.

By playing to his people's interest in their forefathers, Augustus was able to elicit their support and gain confidence his power. He poured money into the construction of buildings, statues, and art work all meant to commemorate Rome's history. Of course, Augustus was in charge of a vast empire and struggled to balance absolute power while maintaining the semblance of holding none at all! His effort was especially important given that Caesar's downfall largely rested on his pursuit of total power, marked in particular by a coin that proclaimed "Dictator in perpetuo." Although Augustus did wish to commemorate himself, too, he did manage to avoid Caesar's mishaps by building a number of projects (such as the Theatre of Pompey) that did not bear his name, inscription or otherwise (Res Gestae, Section 20). However, Augustus subtly (or otherwise) tried to assert his godliness without actually proclaiming himself a deity. Most of the statues carved in Augustus' likeness during his lifetime portrayed him in eternal youth.

This canoe model, created by a Haida, Tlingit, or Tsimshian artist, exhibits the same technique, form, design, and painting used for large-scale canoes. Carved from a single log, the model has the central characteristic U-shape of larger canoes and the narrowing ends typical of head canoes, known as long tails by the Tlingit. The abstract, ovoid shapes represent different kinds of animals in green, red, and black pigment and follow the natural contours of the canoe. Canoe models were often made for some of the earliest non-Native travelers to the Northwest, and were carved by the same master artists who crafted large-scale canoes and lived in Haida and Tlingit communities.

With sunken, wrinkled cheeks and snaggled teeth, this object depicts a character known as Huehueteotl or the Old God, one of the oldest deities of central Mexico. The basin on top of the head may have been used for keeping coals or incense hot. Roughly carved from local igneous rock, the figure and basin symbolically and materially compressed the fearsome power of the volcanoes that ring the Valley of Mexico into the thin, hunched body of an old man. Objects such as this one are found in large numbers at the site, indicating that the Old God was very important to all members of Teotihuacan society, from the rulers to the ruled. Often found on patios, braziers may also have been used in rituals when residents renovated their living quarters.

The arched doors, flat columns or pilasters, and scrolled pediment at the top of this desk and bookcase all stem from Roman architecture. This desk is exceptional for the detailed carving of Corinthian capitals on the pilasters and the sprig of acanthus foliage above the doors. The fronts of the lower desk drawers were sawn from thick boards and carved to create a three-part rhythm of projecting and receding volumes. This desk and bookcase provided locked storage for books, business papers, textiles, and other valuables, and it provided a workspace for writing when the slanted lid was opened.

Lavishly carved, the rich and fluid relief sculpture adorning this lidded box reveals male and female ancestral figures. On the base, shown to the right of the lid, two male figures flank a female figure at center. Their heads extend from either end of the container to form knobs, which allowed the box to hang from the rafters of a Maori home. Household residents typically viewed the boxes from below (see multiple views).

In Midwestern cities like Cincinnati, Ohio, where this table was made, and St. Louis, Missouri, many women practiced woodcarving, china painting, and other decorative arts. A table carved by Julia Hall Rice, possibly this example, was included in the influential exhibition of decorative arts by Cincinnati women at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876.

On the plinth there's a representation of the sculptor, Master Pilgram, carved in the pose of a Peeping Tom. The Servants' Madonna dates from 1340 and, according to legend, was made after a maid turned to the Virgin for help after being wrongly accused of theft (she was soon after proven innocent).

The first of many chapels you'll see upon entering St. Stephen's Cathedral is the Tirna Chapel. Built in 1359, it's the burial place of Prince Eugene, renowned as the conqueror of the Turks. In addition to the 15th-century Crucifix above the altar, take a peek at the beard of Christ: it's made of human hair and, according to legend, is still growing. 2b1af7f3a8
