We found that the transcriptional activity of ERalpha and a subset of ERbeta-mediated genes is stimulated by both estrogens and growth factors in human breast cancer cells, suggesting the presence of both ERalpha- and ERbeta-mediated signaling pathways in these cells. Although the transcriptional activity of ERalpha is mediated by many factors including its own coactivators and corepressors, ERalpha-mediated transcription appears to be further stimulated by the activity of ERbeta through direct ERalpha-ERbeta heterodimerization. This novel ERalpha-ERbeta heterodimeric signaling pathway activates the transcription of a subset of genes involved in the differentiation and growth of mammary epithelial cells as well as of a few ERbeta-regulated genes in breast cancer cells, suggesting that the activity of ERalpha and ERbeta is critical for the stimulation of various growth and differentiation-related genes in mammary epithelial cells.Appraisal of topography in chronic complete and incomplete macular hole surgery.
