Procured cocaine was used by 34 percent (2,117) of respondents in thecities where it was available. Thirty-four percent of cocaine purchasers were considered "newcomers," having recentlybecome dependent upon it for the first time. Sixty-five percent ofpeople who procured cocaine were between the ages of 14 and 21,and these youth were more likely to be white than nonwhite. Sixty- twopercent of cocaine purchasers were male, consisting mostly of AfricanAmerican/mixed race males. Seven percent also were in school. AfricanAmerican/mixed race males and females procured the drug at almost thesame rate. Sixty-four percent of those who procured cocaine weredealing the drug locally. In relation to their cocaine procuring, forty- six percent of those who procured cocaine also sold cocaine or were dealers. Almost75 percent of respondents procured cocaine from their boyfriends/girlfriends, colleagues, friends, or family. Only 12 percentprocured it from street peddlers. Twenty-five percent of those whoprocured the drug from these other sources were influenced by drugs whenthey committed the crime that they were charged with. Half of those whoprocured from these other sources were admitted to either a public or a private drug program. Fifty-seven percent of those who procured from these other sources needed orfelt dependent on or wanted to quit using cocaine, and of those atthe time of the procurement interview, 25 percent were detoxed.
Twenty-three percent of respondents with cocaine procured (1,073) said theyhad obtained the drug from a "new" source. Fifty-eight percent were able toidentify the source to whom they had supplied the drug, and almost half-these respondents (45.4%) sought out this source. Sixty-five percent ofthose who procured cocaine from this new source used cocaine at leastonce a month, and 31 percent had used the drug within the past 3 days.Eighty-one percent had never been arrested or convicted of a drug offense,and this was more likely when the respondent obtained cocaine from adrug rehabilitation or treatment program. d2c66b5586
