Rida adopted the "scientific path" in his search for Islamic revival. He rejected the traditional support of official science by Muslim authorities and instead followed the example set by Mawlawi Sunni Muslim scholars such as Ibn Rushd (Averroes) and Ashraf Lahmaj (Al-Kindi). He proffered a pragmatic Islamic system of the "four sciences," i.e., mysticism (tajwid), jurisprudence (fiqh), history (taqlid), and mathematics (al-akhlaq), as the basis for his Ijtihad philosophy, which are complementary aspects of what he views as the true Muslim approach to life. He held that the modern world offers these sciences a golden opportunity to revitalize their teachings to provide the true basis for Islam, thus eliminating the need for dogmatic sheikhs.[190][191]
The specific focus of Rida's philosophy of ijtihad was on the need for reform and purification of Islamic learning, through the revival of the (Islamic) sciences of the medieval Muslim world, particularly in the disciplines of economics, philosophy, and especially jurisprudence (fiqh). Rida's career was devoted to a re-interpretation of the classical texts, the improvement of the educational system of the Ottoman empire (resulting in government funding for his Al-Azhar University iftar classes), and the revival of the Muslim sciences (including subjects like medicine, physics, astronomy, and biology). His curricular and educational reforms in the Ottoman curricula were to become a model for the education of modern Muslim societies.
