Newer series' episodes aren't usually self-contained. They are part of serialized season-long story arcs. So watching individual episodes isn't very enjoyable. But, older drama episodes, with the exception of the occasional 2 or 3 episode arc, were usually self-contained. (Babylon 5 and Deep Space 9 had long arcs.
