Depending on how you got your copy of Windows 10 or Windows 11, you'll need either a 25-character product key or a digital license to activate it. A digital license (called a digital entitlement in Windows 10, Version 1511) is a method of activation in Windows 10 and Windows 11 that doesn't require you to enter a product key. Without one of these, you won't be able to activate your device.

After having hard drive issues (blue screen of death), I replaced the hard drive and installed windows 8 pro on my laptop. After a week of having issues with the mouse and reinstalling the driver software for USB mouse and mousepad several times, I contacted Microsoft support. After a few hours of trying to pinpoint the issue microsoft support informed me that my PC was not compatible with windows 8 due to not having driver software updates for windows 8. I was informed to reinstall windows 7. My computer came originally with windows 7 home premium OS. My problem is I cannot make out the product key on the sticker on the bottom of the computer and since the hard drive was replaced the product key is no longer in the system either. Microsoft told me to contact HP support for assistance in recovering the product key. Please help
Hmm ... that 'buyer beware' phrase comes to mind. If it doesn't have the license sticker on it, then it is not running a legit operating system. Even if you do get a valid license key by running Belarc or Magic Jelly Bean, there's no way to know where that key came from.
Key is not in the BIOS on Windows 7 (only 8), but Dell installation media checks the BIOS to make sure it is a Dell so it can install and activate, but without a license key sticker, that isn't legit either.
Before downloads became common, Windows operating systems came in physical optical discs like CDs. But due to duplication issues, Microsoft began assigning specific numbers to each copy sold. This way, the software can only be used after entering the included installation key. So, Windows 7 license or product key is a 25-character code that activates the operating system after installing it. This key is sometimes called a product code, CD key, or key code.

Error: Invalid Volume License Key. In order to activate, you need to change your product key to a valid Multiple Activation Key (MAK) or Retail key. You must have a qualifying operating system license AND a Volume license Windows 7 upgrade license, or a full license for Windows 7 from a retail source. ANY OTHER INSTALLATION OF THIS SOFTWARE IS IN VIOLATION OF YOUR AGREEMENT AND APPLICABLE COPYRIGHT LAW.

You must first upgrade from the qualifying version of Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 (whether you do it through Windows Update or using the ISO file.) Ensure the upgrade is completed successfully and then ensure that it is activated. Your best option is to reinstall a valid license you have for either Windows 7, Windows 8.0, or Windows 8.1, make sure it is activated, then upgrade from that to Windows 10 on July 29th or later. This issue particularly affects Windows 7 licenses. If you purchased your Windows 7 license from an auction website such as eBay or the Amazon, you might have mistakenly purchased a counterfeit copy. You can determine this by the product ID which determines your level of support.
If you discover that your license is from MSDN or TechNet, what probably happened is, you bought an MSDN licensed key, which carries up to 10 activations, unlike full packaged retail licenses which only carry 1 activation. The person who sold it to you probably sold it to 10 other people. Somewhere along the way, one of those persons might have installed it on a second system, activated it. Because it went past the 10 activation threshold, Microsoft detected that it was being abused and blocked the key from further use.
